Compassionate Justice Initiatives – Antipoverty Grants

The MNO Synod will receive funding from the ELCIC (given through CLWR gifts) to help enable social justice projects on our territory that seek to address anti-poverty causes and issues in Canada.  These funds are to assist church and society groups, in individual congregations and community organizations in which folks from our congregations participate. The set of criteria for these programs is outlined below.  Projects will be considered as applications are received.  Please note that only projects which will be completed in the 2017 calendar year will qualify.

Contact the synod office for further information.

Deadline to apply is May 26. Click here to apply.

Important Reminder to Congregational Treasurers/Chairs/Pastors:

If your congregation’s fiscal year end is Dec 31, then JUNE 30 2017 is the deadline to file your congregation’s 2016 Annual Information Return, Form T3010 with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).  Failure to file by the deadline could result in the following consequences:

Lay Academy Sessions: June 3 and June 10

Welcoming the stranger and getting to know one’s neighbors, be they inside or outside the pew, has never been the easiest of missions.  At first glance it may appear like we have nothing in common with some people but we need to commit to listening and connecting, to going a step beyond.  Join us for the LAY ACADEMY session on Saturday June 3rd and 10th as we discuss and learn about ‘loving others as ourselves’.  We feature speakers from across the four western synods for 2 x 2.5 hour sessions on Building Community: Welcoming the Stranger/Loving Our Neighbor, facilitated by Rev. Dave Saude of the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Synod.
The Lay Academy is a new program of the Lutheran Theological Seminary and four Western Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), that seeks to provide continuing education opportunities for lay people in the church and for those being prepared for the ELCIC’s National Authorized Lay Ministry program.
The 'LA' sessions are provided through a unique online format that allows multiple sites from across the four Western provinces and Territories to listen and interact with the presenter at the same time, while also enjoying discussion led by a facilitator within a local church setting.  It makes for a collaborative teaching and learning experience!
The sessions are slated to run in MNO from 10:40 am to 1:10 pm and Thunder Bay and east 11:40 am to 2:10 pm
Further information on Registration Fees and sites of attendance will be forthcoming.

Rethinking Church!

Are you ready to ask different questions than simply how to get people to come to church? Than Rethinking Church is for you.

In the last century, Christian congregations in North America largely imagined their mission as attracting people to Sunday morning church. Congregations were taught to measure attendance and offerings. Things are changing.

In what ways have our worship, education and fellowship changed? How is the Holy Spirit forming community in our contexts in 2017? Mark your calendar for July 26-28, 2017 and explore these questions at Rethinking Church.
