400 Years Since Rasmus Jensen

Pastor Rasmus Jensen was part of the Danish explorer, Jens Munk’s, crew that left Denmark in May, 1619, and arrived in the Hudson Bay, landing a little ways north of Churchill, MB, on September 7th, 1619.

“The expedition spent the winter caught in the ice near the mouth of what is now the Churchill River, near what is now Churchill, Manitoba. Only three members of the Expedition, including Munk, survived the winter. The rest died of starvation, the fierce winter, and of scurvy.” (Danish Canadian Museum)

The first Lutheran service in North America took place in what is now MNO Synod, with Pastor Jensen presiding!

Pastor Jensen died on February 20, 1620.
