Technology has permeated the lives of most Christians and congregations, to the point that now many scholars speak of “digitality” as a culture. Also, the recent pandemic has made technology an ever-present reality for the work of ministry. BOTH in-person community AND digitality can serve as a means through which to proclaim the gospel, offer grace, pray, educate, lament and enact other aspects of ministry. Digitality as a culture can be a place of Christian formation and community development.
Through large group sessions and small group discussion, we will explore what it means to lead in a both/and church as it relates to facilitating community, providing spiritual care, attending to faith formation and learning, and informing worship and preaching. Drawing on the principals of design thinking, small groups will provide space for participants to reflect on leadership strategies for existing or future ministry contexts and to provide mutual support as they live in this ever-changing approach to leadership.
Even though many congregations have “returned” to their previous ways of being, the effects of the pandemic remain, which includes
incorporating technology in a healthy way and adapting to future changes when they happen.
The Rev. Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero (PhD) is the Grace Professor of Leadership and Director of Contextual Formation at Lutheran Theological Seminary Saskatoon. He was ordained in January 2024 and is rostered in the MNO Synod. Previously, he served as the Steck-Miller Assistant Professor of Worship and Liturgy at United Lutheran Seminary in Pennsylvania. His research interests include liturgy, practical theology, digital church and education, and leadership, which came together in his edited book Church After the Corona Pandemic: Consequences for Worship and Theology, published in 2023. As the newest faculty member at LTS, Dr. Schiefelbein-Guerrero incorporates theological reflection on the nature of leadership in the changing church as part of the seminary’s life and imparting necessary practical skills to students.
