Frequently Asked Questions:
Can individuals receive grants from the MNO Synod for Day of Action Grants?
- No. The grants are for congregations. The individual applying for the grant must be engaging with a congregation in the planning/execution of the event. This means at least two people involved in the event/activity need to be directly connected to an MNO congregation, and invite participation from the congregation in the event/activity.
Can congregations who are not connected to the MNO receive a grant?
- No. The grants are approved for congregations of the MNO Synod.
Does the event/activity have to happen on May 31, 2026?
- No. The ELCIC is encouraging May 31 as a national Day of Action. However, if an event has to be organized for a different date, the grant funds are still available. The event must happen before Dec. 30, 2026.
Does the event have to connect specifically to the ELCIC Day of Action?
- We hope so. The goal of the ELCIC Day of Action is to encourage congregations to live into the ELCIC tag line: Share God’s grace and unconditional love. The activity does not need to be overtly ‘religious,’ but we do hope that applicants will consider how the activity is a reflection of God’s grace and unconditional love. If you’re not sure how your event idea fits, contact Deacon Michelle Collins in the synod office and we’ll talk about it.
Does the synod have t-shirts?
- No. The synod does not have t-shirts available to purchase. Please use the link provided through the ELCIC Day of Action web site to order t-shirts, or download the logos and use a local t-shirt designer/printer.
What is the reporting requirement for grants received for the Day of Action?
- Grant recipients are required to complete the reporting form that will be sent to the contact person who submitted the application. We would like to have at least one picture. General accounting of the funds is part of the report, to ensure the funds were used within the grant’s intention. Submitting photos related to this event gives the synod permission to use those photos, so please make sure you have permission from participants to take/share their photos.
What if we change our mind about our activity after we receive the grant?
- You can still use the funds for the new activity, as long as it fits within the goals of the ELCIC Day of Action. Please send an email to the MNO Synod office to let us know your specific activity is different than what you proposed in your grant application.
What if our expenses are less than we expected?
- If you have leftover funds from this grant, please return them to the MNO Synod so they can be available for future grant opportunities. Funds received as a grant cannot be used for expenses not related to the project.
What if our expenses exceed what we requested?
- The maximum grant amount that the synod is able to award is $500/congregation. If you requested less than that amount, and your actual expenses exceed the amount you requested, be in touch with the synod office. If you received $500, we are unable to provide you with additional grant funds. You may apply for a different grant through the Synod Grants Committee.
What if I’m not sure if the project/event/activity fits the requirements of the grant?
- If you have an idea, fill out the application. If you’re not sure how to classify your idea, you can contact Deacon Michelle Collins for conversation about your idea. We can help you classify it or refine your idea to fit the goals of the Day of Action.
